Although primarily funded to pursue its specific fundamental research goals, INFN is more and more asked to exploit its expertise and infrastructures to foster the social, industrial and economical progress of the country. ICT technologies represent a promising area where the synergy between CNAF technological expertise and external demand for specific technology transfer services can be potentially strong and profitable for INFN.

As an example of this kind of activities, CNAF is currently participating in two Smart Cities projects, already approved for the southern regions of Italy, which propose the development and implementation of an open, interoperable, federated Cloud infrastructure for the Local Public Administrations.
